Material Pleasure vs. Mental Pleasure. What is the difference between them and which one should you seek?
Material Pleasure vs. Mental Pleasure. What is the difference between them and which one should you seek?
This blog is something different from the usual investment and finance talks. I am going to talk about something very subjective. You may or may not agree with my view. Just try to give yourself some time to contemplate on the same. If you don't understand, just skip this post.
Every person out there has his/her own interests and way of living. Similarly, the goals that each person has differs from that of the next person in the room. Although everyone cannot be a billionaire, one doesn't need to be a billionaire to live a quality life. Some people find pleasure in material things such as a luxurious car, however, some people find more pleasure in mental pleasures such as sky diving, visiting people from different cultures, etc.
Look at the two situations below. Would you like to buy a luxury car and give rich companies more money or would you like to be the reason for bringing a better future for the unprivileged kids?
I know a lot of you would be like it's your hard work and you deserve that car but that's where a selfless person comes into the picture. Even rich people after fulfilling all their material desires focus on gaining more happiness by contributing to society because material pleasures fade after getting used to it. However, your body creates happy hormones each time you do something good for others. This clearly doesn't say that you have to live on minimum wage, it just implies that after getting a respected position try to do something good for some people such as sponsoring kids education, helping poor people who want money for health matters, etc.
Your wealth is decided by how much you can give others. If you focus on just accumulating wealth, then you might become so passionate about it that you don't even give time to your family. This is where you should stop and think, what is the ultimate aim of earning money? Is it to get a better quality of life for you and your family or living in a frivolous manner, just accumulating wealth. Some people cut back on their lifestyle to such a great extent that they don't realize they are going to live poor and die rich. There has to be a balance between your work and leisure.
People who seek pleasure in visiting new places, trying new cuisines, meeting new people, spending time to make friendships more valuable are the ones who are more inclined towards mental pleasure. However, people who seek pleasure in buying bigger houses, costly cars and just accumulating money for themselves are the ones who are inclined towards material pleasure. Material pleasure deteriorates after some time, however, mental pleasure keeps you strong and happy all the time. Material pleasure needs you to have money, however, mental pleasure can be gained even without money.
You need to keep working for more material pleasure but mental pleasure like traveling can bring you money itself. For instance, YouTubers like Mountain Trekker travel loads of places and earn money through vlogging simultaneously. The ultimate purpose of this post is that you should not focus only on earning money in life. Other than earning money you should try to give time to your family, contribute something to society, help any person you can, focus on giving comfort to your body, and sometimes just relax your mind by being at some place close to nature. It is true that one can achieve both mental and material pleasure together but if you don't have a lot of money, you can still live a life that's meaningful and brought about a change in society.
